You’re on your way to achieving a goal – congrats! You’re get excited about what is in store for your future. You’ve built that momentum necessary to achieve your goals that doesn’t come around often. You get so excited, in fact, that you just want to let everyone know what you are up to!
Wrong-o!!!
Don’t go there, sis! I used to share ALL of my goals with (anyone, really) before even start working on it! It actually was counterproductive and caused delays and set-backs. I finally learned my lesson and now I want to share it with you. Let me tell you why.
Reason #1: Avoid Procrastination
When you tell people your goals, it sends messages to your brain similar to that of already achieving the goal. NYU Research done by Gollwitzer & Sheeran from 2009 has shown that when intentions (goals) are made known, it can give the person a premature sensation of achieving the goal. When you do this, you risk demotivating yourself toward taking the necessary actions to pursue it. You actually become less excited about the goal because talking about achieving it already gave you such a great feeling!
2) Negative Nancies
There are people who are either going to minimize your goals or perhaps try to discourage you from pursuing them altogether! You shouldn’t care about other people’s opinions BUT… we are human!
Whether we like it or not, sometimes we just do. If you do want to share your goals, do it with a very trusted friend or relative that believes in you and supports everything you do.
3.) Stop giving your frenemies amo!
This tip is similar to point #2 but when you openly talk about your goals it catches all type of attention, including the attention of envious people in your network. There will always be haters, and that’s actually a good thing! Some “haters” may admire you and the lofty goals you are headed for but because of their small-minded, clouded judgement, they might try to impede you from accomplishing them by projecting their beliefs on to you. It’s best to not give them a reason to try! Just keep your mouth shut and focus on making your dreams become a reality!
4) Just achieve them!
There is no better feeling than telling someone that you’ve just achieved a specific goal! Why not just wait until you’ve done it? If you’re going to brag, brag about what you already did and not about something you are still going to do! 😉
